I saw you the summer of 1971 at University of Houston. Willie did a walk on. I've been a fan since. You are just so unique....your style on the piano is just so human and raw. From the first note heard there is no doubt that is you.....hauntingly beautiful. My birthday is coming up in June and I hope to see you at the House of Blues. Your music is a touchstone to my past but is truly "music for all of life." Thank you for bringing "it" to so many.

My husband and I have been sifting through your past, listening over and over to your songs... and still can't let it go.
Then tonight I learned something about my husband's ALMOST encounter with you... In the seventies he quit his job and drove to Tulsa to try to get work as a musician but chickened out every time he passed the church. And he passed it every day to and from a job making parts for oil pumps. In the end, he left Tulsa when he heard his father needed him to run his dry cleaning plant. But 10 years later he returned to Tulsa. This time he went into the church, asked about work, met Tom Russell and stayed to play piano for six hours... Well, you touched so many and we all have our own special memories. Thank you for all the music. It is always great to hear! |

A friend just bought me a ticket to see you in Ferndale on 6-16-13. My husband recently passed but our theme song in 1972 was A Song For You. He had bipolar illness and his last theme song was "I Was In The Hands of Angels.... I was able to do for him, what Elton did for you.... pick him up... and give him the last and best 6 months of his life. I know the Lord sent me to him with your album and he loved all those songs.... Youre Never Too Old to Hold Somebody... I love the Jimmy Rodgers song.... rolling down the highway...pop a top and spend the night with Gideon... yeah...we got saved in 1980 and life has been sweet ever since knowing Jesus. I feel like His hand touched you too.... We loved seeing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame video...my husband wept when you said..I just want to say thank you ...and bless your heart..... and at the end... Hallelujiah.
You are the best...I am a piano player and you have been my inspiration ever since the concert for Bangladesh.... Leon, Play it for Jesus! |

Hey Man! You are the best. I was in love with you when I was 15, and now I am falling again all over. Lost track of you due to all the vagaries of life, but after hearing The Union, and more recently, a lot of downloads! I am so impressed all over again. I think I first "saw" you on the concert film Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Myself and several of my young girlfriends were all ga-ga for you from that and then got to see you live in Denver (we grew up in a small town in Colorado). But now I have seen so much of you on YouTube, wish I could see a live show. Keep rocking. And congrats on the RRHOF! You certainly deserved it! I had no idea that you had played on so much of the music I grew up with.

Went to Friday's show in Terminal West. Good show, but was disapointed that you didn't sing Lady Blue. That one song was why we went. Feel kind of cheated on this personally.
