Just want to say that it is so hard to lose such heroes or talented folk that we grew up listening to, it means we are getting older, he is missed for sure. Great memories of him, saw him in Charlotte, N.C., Hampton Road, Va. kind of hard to swallow all the sadness.

Still sad about Leon's passing, although I know he must feel better in Heaven. It's just hard for us who loved him and his music. He was truly a musical genius, and it is hard to imagine that he won't be writing new songs for us. He did, however, leave us a treasure trove of beautiful songs that I never tire of.

I was able to see the memorial service online, which was a great tribute to him. At the end of the service, there was a song that Leon was singing, it was playing as people were leaving the service. It is a beautiful song, but I don't know the name of it. I really love it and would like to find it. It starts with "My poor heart sounds like a drum on a mountain far away. I'm waiting here for my time to come and I........" That is all I heard from the very short time it played. I think it might be a fairly recent song, maybe written in the 2000's.
Can anyone tell me the name of the song?

My prayers are with the family and hope they know that all the Leon fans are sending their love to them.

All my love and prayers for comfort and healing are with you.

Becky Frazer

Thank you for your comments Becky. The song you heard was "On A Distant Shore". Just before he passed, Leon had completed work on a new album and this song is the title song. The album is beautifully orchestrated and his daughter Coco Bridges painted a portrait which is used on the cover. It will be available in stores on Sept 22nd. Please be watching for more information on this album in the coming weeks. There is a deluxe edition that has a lyric booklet that you might enjoy.

I had enjoyed the man's music throughout my life, but I didn't know exactly how important his sound was to me, until I finally "cracked the code" of the lyricism, subtleties, and production mastery of "Carney," which I now call "the basilica of the church of Leon Russell." After acquiring so many of the classic Wrecking Crew LPs,I learned that Leon is the foundation of so many things that have been familiar to me all my life. He was always there, but sometimes I didn't know it. Very recently, I had an epiphany, and though I am not religious, I'm an atheist, but I saw in a dream...a therapeutic dream that if I were to join any church, it would be his, even now that he's gone. I want to say to all of you that I do respect how his music changed your lives, and how in records such as "Carney" he is able to elicit genuine feeling...to draw out one's emotions. I see Leon Russell's LPs as complete masterpiece paintings of sound. As a person, I consider him to be an empathetic shaman, he leads the journey and keeps travelers safe. He really understood what moves people, and the healing power of what he did musically. Thanks, Leon, and to the group.

I'm so grateful I found the music by the man - at first, didn't make much impression but with time I really started to appreciate it! Looking forward to collect the recordings and respect the legacy!

I second the previous statement. I saw Leon so many places, so many times in NC and in other states. My favorite recording will always be "Solid State". A favorite song from the recording is: "A New Kind Of Fire". What a great musical poet was the great Leon Russell.

Can anybody out there in Leon-Land tell me where I can purchase or download the "Solid State" album on CD or mp3?

I had to have a CD made from my cassette. Never found it on CD, wasn't sold that way. You may find an LP or cassette on eBay.

From the moment I got the phone call at 7:30AM on that Sunday morning until now (and forever more), my life feels a little bit emptier than it did before that phone call. It's still hard to grasp that I will never be planning any vacations around your travel schedule. That was the highlight of my year - seeing where we would be going, visiting new places for Gary and me and always knowing we were in store for some fantastic music. I don't enjoy videos of you as much as I used to - they just seem to make the hole a little larger. I can't even begin to imagine the depth of what Jan, the girls and the rest of your family are experiencing. Rest In Paradise dear Leon - until we also get "Over The Rainbow" and once again, hear the kick-ass heavenly rock and roll band you've put together. Always in my heart.

I have listened to his great song "A Song for You" many times and have thought it was written for a special lucky lady in his life. Recently while enjoying this classic musical story my mind went in a different direction and the thought came that he may have been singing this to Jesus. It fits perfectly if you listen close. Now I can't hear it without believing he wrote it for and sang it to Jesus. It always has made me cry, but now it always makes me want to repent and sing it with him to Jesus. Thank you Leon! Jokingly...I kid myself into thinking he wrote two songs for me; "Tight Rope"(first wife) and "This Masquerade"(second wife). Thanks again! Love you!

Yesterday I spent the day remembering Leon on his birthday Watched the SNL episode and other filmed concerts. I still can't believe I will never get to sit in the audience and be mesmerized by Leon's talent again. To his family - I heard Leon was writing songs while he was recuperating. I hope you have plans to have those published on a cd - the boys in the band and perhaps Bruce Hornsby or John Fullbright on vocals and piano? What a wonderful gift to his memory it would be! Keeping you all in my prayers always. Thank you Leon for sharing your amazing God given gift of music with us.
